Better Directors, Better Business and a Better Economy

HIE LEADERSHIP 2016-18 Programmes

The call for leadership in Scotland has never been so prominent.

With the support of ERDF, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) aims to increase leadership capability and ambition through these programmes delivered for the agency by the Institute of Directors (IoD) who have organised 24 successful networks in Central Scotland, the Highlands, Orkney & Shetland regions between 2001 and 2014.

Ambitious directors, aspiring directors, senior and owner-managers of medium, small and micro organisations, across the private and third sector – where the ambition is for a step change, accelerating growth, increasing innovation – whether leading or having a material impact on decisions for change.

Leaders reflect their environment and the commercial climate where they operate. Running an operation is much more than budgets and forecasts – important though they are. It’s about the organisation and crucially the culture you build – the environment you create – the people you work with – developing, leading and empowering them to deliver on your behalf. In today’s digital world we have to be open, be tuned in to exploit our markets and the environment we work in. It’s about putting customers at the heart of all we do and working in partnership with a challenging supply chain.

Simply – it is about leading an organisation that is more innovative, more dynamic, and more open to new ways of working than the competition. The Highlands and Islands geography and environment creates its own unique challenges for leaders.

The Leadership for Growth Programme recognises this. Delivered by the Institute of Directors (IoD), working with Dundee University Management School and Glasgow School of Art Innovation Institute based in Forres, it will help you take a new look at your organisation: help you develop new skills, build a crucial self-help network with your peers on the programme, as well as improving your leadership skills; all through a series of interactive and highly participative sessions delivered by experienced and practical facilitators.

The new programme builds on the previous successful IoD experience which created and delivered 24 networks to over 220 business leaders across the Highlands and Islands. It draws on the IoD experience of delivering a focused range of leadership, director and senior manager development programmes, combined with front line experience in leading organisations of all sizes in Scotland, the UK and international markets.

A must for the highly ambitious, open minded leader in a fast growing organisation- probably at the third or fourth development stage. International growth will be on the agenda in potential terms or set for acceleration to higher sustainable levels of growth.

The Programme is built around two x 2 and a half days Learning Journeys. One to leading global organisations in Scotland, the other to similar organisations based in Mainland Europe.

This is not your usual Learning Journey. Crafted and led by specialists in the field, with wide International experience, plus the ability to access the operational Executive Teams in world leading operations.

When it comes to growing businesses, developing leadership or embedding a new corporate culture into an established brand or organisation, it is not enough to go into a classroom or read the latest views of established thought leaders on the internet. Business is about leadership and communication best learned by being in the presence of those who have ‘been there, done that’, spending time in the proximity of companies that have not only survived their share of ‘ups and downs’ but thrived.

This programme is based on reality based learning and is all about understanding how other organisations have solved problems and achieved success. New ideas can be cultivated that will fuel your own organisation and allow you to exploit opportunities that had to date seemed closed.

Led by the Institute of Directors, in conjunction with Dundee University Management School and Glasgow School of Art Innovation Institute based at Forres, the High Impact Leadership Programme supports highly ambitious business leaders over a 12 month period to address issues, develop their businesses/organisations, gain a network of fellow leaders, improve personal skills, gain confidence, improve leadership of their organisations and develop a High Impact Plan for their organisation.

Mentoring and coaching have key differences – they also share a number of similarities – the key one is that both are designed to help people inside organisations develop and hone their skills.

The Mentor for Growth Programme is designed and delivered by the IoD, the UK’s largest individual membership business organisation. As such it has considerable experience in crafting and delivering Mentor programmes. In addition, the IoD delivers the programme in conjunction with Dundee University Management School and Glasgow School of Art Innovation Institute based at Forres, providing a wide range of very experienced Mentors, all of whom have been trained by the IoD. The Programme Managers are active in receiving mentoring as part of their own support and also practised in providing that support across a wide range of organisations.

Running a business in the Highlands and Islands is all-consuming: with fewer people to bounce ideas off, little time to look up and focus on the future, limited access to appropriate knowledge and support, plus all the challenges of working in small communities and the strain of wearing many hats concurrently. The value of being able to talk through all manner of challenges on a confidential basis is invaluable.

Quotes from previous participants

“Having been in the business for some time I suppose I thought I knew most of it. How wrong I was. The leadership programme gave me lots to think about and challenged many of my methods. The workshops were informative, active and relative to my own circumstances. One of the main strengths of the programme was the opportunity to meet and build relationships with other business managers. I would not hesitate to recommend the programme” Managing Director, Boat Yard

“The HIE Level Leadership Programme provided me with an excellent, structured programme of “real world” business theory learning.  The opportunity to openly discuss common issues with course colleagues has proven to be highly beneficial.  Highly recommended!!”  General Manager, Spirits Company

“This was one of the most stretching and developmental courses I have ever experienced.  It gave great opportunities for networking and growing new contacts and friends.  The course definitely delivers in its goal to develop people in their career and for their business.”   Managing Director, Cashmere Specialists
