The iconic Gleneagles Hotel was the setting for the IoD Scotland Annual Conference and welcomed around 150 delegates on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 November 2016.  This year’s Conference explored The Business of Leadership. 

Delegates enjoyed engaging with world-class speakers and participating in first-class workshops, together with excellent opportunities to connect with colleagues from all sectors of Scotland’s business community.

Speakers from across the business world – genuine experts and proven business leaders – talked from their own practical experience.  Those exploring the conference theme on Friday were:

A series of workshops by Diligent, Skills Development Scotland and Vistage International delivered up-to-date, relevant and useful information on key issues.

New for this year was the IoD Scotland Forum in association with The Times Scotland, which was a panel debate chaired by Lindsay McIntosh, Scottish Political Editor of The Times Scotland and featuring Professor Susan Deacon, Chair of IoD Scotland; Brad MacKay, Professor of Strategic Management at the University of St Andrews School of Management; Tom Miers, who runs the Brussels Office of Europe Economics; and Jeremy Peat OBE, FRSE, Visiting Professor to the International Public Policy Institute, University of Strathclyde.

Thursday’s pre-conference looked at Leadership:  Born or Built?  The Leadership Lecture, delivered by Mike Cantlay OBE was followed by the Panel Debate, where Dr Cantlay was joined by Beth Corcoran, The James Hutton Institute, Angela Vickers, Apex Hotels and Jane Clark-Hutchison, Bank of Scotland.  Mini workshops, delivered by Nick Kuenssberg OBE, Mike Willisand Emma Little, focused on Board Performance, the Role of the Non-Executive Director and Creating New Business Models.

black tie dinner concluded conference on Friday – a thoroughly enjoyable opportunity to connect with old friends and new colleagues. The pre-dinner speaker was Keith Brown MSP, Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Jobs and Fair Work, and the after-dinner speaker was Douglas Fraser, Business & Economy Editor, BBC Scotland. Thanks to the generosity of dinner guests, over £2,000 was raised for ENABLE Scotland.
